I can agree with that.

Most European and Japanese V6 sound great, the American ones i dont know.

And for the naysayers always berating the PRV, the 155 DTM started using the PRV in 1996 because the 60° V of the Busso wasnt the best for the use (the PRV has a 90° V) :

A PRV with the original “wrong” odd-firing flat-plane crankshaft :

And with a modern ver si on of the engine (24v and :

The good old Busso :

The Peugeot-Renault V6 also sound nice :

And still the ES9 with two turbos that does 875hp for 875Kg in the 208 T16 Pikes Peak :

And those who dont like the Nissan VQ :

The VR from the GTR is insane for a turbo engine sound :

The 3.0 TDi common-rail, that i got in my A4 (still with the stock exhaust for the moment) :

The venerable Audi 30v 2.8 V6 (the brother of the 2.7t) :

The Renault V6 DCi (diesel) also sound nice :

I also like the usual Mercedes V6 sounds :

Not to mention the obvious VR6 and many others that i forgot .

You are almost right. But t here are couple of other great sounding V6 engines from the same DTM bunch. M-B and Opel had similar engines too. M-B used 90 degree v-angle engine loosely based on their V8 engine but Opel used 54 degree engine with a cast iron block (actually it was made using a new material called SinterCast Compacted Graphite Iron).

The engine that we are hearing is a ‘94 version which is the second variation of Alfa R omeo’s 60 degree engine. They had also one earlier and one later 60 degree version . The essential upgrades between the en g ines did include: t iming chain replaced with rear mounted timing gears, pneumatic valve “ springs” and twin spark cylinder heads.   But the last version was introduced for the ‘96 season and it used 90 degree angle. The different v-angles of course make these engines sound slightly different but the difference is a very small one when these are screaming at close to 12,000 rpm. I suspect that t he y might be using lower limited speed now that the factory backing is gone.

All of these engines share certain basic dimensions and ma terials with some engine used by the manufacturer at some point. But none of them wa s actually using   any production engine parts. These things were super expensive and according to the rumors the final season 1996 cars were more expensive to build than the same season F1 cars.

You’re only half correct: Behold! The only manufacturer to make V6s that don’t sound like poo!

examples below:

European/Japanese V6 are usually 60° (the PRV and 3.0 TDI CR that are at 90°) while US ones are usually based on V8s and so are 90°.

The Mechachrome V6 currently used in Formula 3 (NA) and 2 (turbo) and in endurance is a hot side V opened at 95° :

VR6 V6. VR6 I6. VR6 = Stra nge Magic.

I mean, that warble is like halfway between an equal leng th header WRX and a 2JZ . It is utterly unique, and so is the engine. Calling it a V6 is not a fair comparison.

That Mecachrome engine is indeed quite strange . I guess the company has made a very good deal to supply engines in many formula cars.

60 degrees is an angle that can make an evenly firing engine with a simple crankshaft. It is also balanced better than the other angle variations.

Alfa Romeo’s 90 degree DTM engine was indeed officially based on the PRV V6 engine as its corporate sister Lancia used the engine briefly. The PRV V6 was a 90 degree engine as it was initially designed as a V8 but shortened during the design process. GM did the same for couple of their V8's.

VW’s diesel V6 is a 90 degree engine but it uses offset crank pins to get the firing order even. It also has a balance shaft. I don’t know any VW’s V8 engines that might have been reason for the angle choice. Maybe some did exist o n the drawing table but maybe the engineers did find some other reason to go with the 90 degrees.

Slightly rela ted topic . There also exists a family of 60 degree V8 engines . Ford did shorten their 60 degree V12 aero engine to make a 60 degree V8. It was used in tanks etc during the WWII.

Yeah the VR6 is a wacky thing. It looks like it might be a narrow angle SOHC V6... and then you see the valves... and you think, “ OH!, it’s actually a DOHC I6!” and then you look at the crank angles and you’re like “wait, what...?” and you begin to see that the VR6 is it’s own thing entirely.

Huh, that sounds WAY better than that engine ever did in any Mazda product... I wasn’t sure (until I googled) if it used the same mill as the Contour... The SVT-masaged 2.5 Duratec also sounded pretty OK, if just a bit too... Even? Boring? Unexciting? It’s close, but not perfect. Your Probe sounds (sounded) pretty good actually.

Thanks. I always enjoyed it back then. It was decent with a cat back but that clip was after headers and a huge resonator was added. If someone did the same exhaust it technically would sound the same in a MX-6, 626, or almost the same in a MX-3 with it’s little version of the  engine.
